Packaging Design

The Only Ad That's There at the Moment of Choice

On a shelf you get about three seconds and no second chance. Packaging design is the work of winning that moment — and of producing artwork the printer can actually run.

The Basics

What Is Packaging Design?

Packaging design covers both the structure of a pack and the graphics printed on it — and the technical artwork that lets it be manufactured correctly.

Shelf performance is the primary test. The pack has to be identifiable from a distance, communicate the product and its variant instantly, and look right beside its competitors.

Regulatory and technical requirements run alongside: mandatory declarations, barcode specifications, material constraints, dielines, bleeds and colour separations all have to be correct or the run fails.

E-commerce has added a second test — the pack now also has to read as a thumbnail on a marketplace listing.

Why It Matters

Why Packaging Decides Sales

For most consumer products, packaging is the largest single influence on purchase at the point of decision.

It also sets perceived value. Identical products in different packs support materially different price points.

And getting it wrong is expensive in a way digital design never is — a print run cannot be edited after the fact.

Brands invest in packaging design to:

  • Stand out on a crowded shelf
  • Support a higher price point
  • Communicate variants instantly
  • Meet regulatory requirements
  • Read clearly as an online thumbnail
  • Avoid costly print errors

Common Pitfalls

Why design projects disappoint

Most design problems trace back to an unclear brief and a review process where nobody can say what 'better' means.

  • No written brief to judge against
  • Reviewed by committee with no decision maker
  • Approved on screen, never tested in use
  • Trends chosen over longevity
  • No source files handed over
  • Wrong colour space for print
  • Single asset with no system behind it
  • Endless open-ended revisions
How We Work

A clear path from brief to artwork

  1. Brief & discovery

Objective, audience, application and success criteria agreed in writing.

  2. Research & references

Category, competitor and visual reference review to set direction.

  3. Concept development

Distinct routes explored rather than variations on one idea.

  4. Presentation in context

Concepts shown at real size, in real placements.

  5. Refinement

Chosen direction developed through defined revision rounds.

  6. Application

The design extended across the formats and touchpoints it must cover.

  7. Production files

Artwork prepared correctly for print, screen and manufacturing.

  8. Handover
